Candlemas

Sunday 29th January

February 2nd marks the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, the dedication of the newborn Child. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated liturgically with a procession of candles into the church building, signifying the coming of the Light of

Christ into the world. Hence, it became known as Candle Mass. As time went on, this celebration also became the occasion for blessing all candles to be used in the church during the coming year, and, by extension, all candles for the home were brought to church to be blessed.
